BodyFirst
Fitness offers both private fitness training as well as nutritional
consultation services. Our private fitness training sessions
involve a combination of strength training and cardiovascular
conditioning and are as unique as our clients, as each individual
has his or her own specific needs and goals. Unfortunately
fitness is not a “one-size-fits-all” scenario,
and accordingly we develop our strength training and conditioning
programs to meet the individual needs of each client.
We
provide our services to clients of all ages and abilities,
ranging from the youth athlete looking to build muscle size
and strength, in a safe and effective manner, to
those clients well into their 60s and 70s who are looking to
optimize overall health and maintain quality of life for the
years ahead. We work with clients who are
working to lose significant amounts of bodyweight as well as
those who are extremely fit already but may require the extra
motivation necessary to help them break through plateaus and
reach new heights.
Whether
our clients are looking to improve their golf game, train for
a marathon, raise the level of their play on the athletic field
or simply look and feel better about themselves, we strive
to provide each of them with an environment that is conducive
to helping achieve and maintain those goals.
For
those clients seeking to more effectively manage their weight,
we offer personalized nutritional consultation services. Anyone
who has ever struggled with their weight will eventually come
to realize that the key to maintaining a bodyweight that is
both healthy and comfortable is to strike an appropriate balance
between proper diet and regular exercise. On the surface,
this sounds simple enough, so why is it that so many people
in our society continue to struggle with this issue?
The
answer is that while generally people have an understanding
as to what it means to eat “healthfully”, they
more than likely are not familiar with what their own body
is capable of processing on a daily basis, and therefore despite
the fact that they make intelligent food choices and eat “healthfully”,
they may simply be consuming more calories in a given day than
what their body is able to burn. The solution to this
cat and mouse game between taking calories in through food
and burning them through exercise is to be able to quantify
an individual’s ability to process calories – or
their metabolism.
The
term “metabolism” is one that
people use with regularity and comfort, however few recognize
that it actually includes several components.
1. Daily Activity
Profile
2. Exercise Profile
3. Resting Metabolic
Rate (RMR)
The
Daily Activity Profile is essentially the number of calories
that you might burn as a result of what your day consists
of; office work, lumberjacking, child care, walking to
the refrigerator, etc…each of these activities
or lifestyles will have a caloric value associated with it. Similarly,
the Exercise Profile is simply a measure of how many calories
you might burn each day as a result of specific exercise;
20 minutes on the treadmill, an hour of weight training,
a round of golf (walking the course), etc…The third
component, the Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), is where most
people miss their mark.
RMR
refers to the body’s ability to burn calories at rest,
or said another way, this represents the number of calories
that your body would burn over a 24 hour period of time, at
rest – essentially the energy required (in calories burned)
to maintain normal body functions; breathe, circulate your
blood, maintain a consistent temperature, grow hair, etc. What’s
more, RMR can actually comprise up to 65-75% of your body’s
total metabolic capability, so clearly when attempting to effectively
manage bodyweight, it is critically important to quantify this
number and build an eating program that fits within the parameters
of your body’s unique abilities.
At BodyFirst Fitness, our nutritional consultation services
revolve around the concept of calories in vs. calories out,
and as such we are able to actually measure and quantify this
RMR for our clients, with the use of an indirect calorimeter;
the MedGem™ device manufactured by HealtheTech™ (www.healthetech.com).
Once we have established the client’s RMR, we are able
to input the data into our cutting edge software program and
combined with an evaluation of the Daily Activity Profile and
Exercise Profile, we are able to develop an eating program for
each client that is predicated on their own specific metabolic
capabilities and lifestyle.
